Colosseum Underground

The underground section of the Colosseum & the third tier hold impressive stories & sights of the Ancient world. They are exclusively open on certain hours on certain days of the month. A few would know that the Colosseum was created on the whim of emperor Vespesian out of draining a stagnant lake. Six meters of concrete was poured in large quantities & a brick wall to bring it to level ground.

The Roman engineers created tunnels to bring the Gladiators into the stadium unseen. The animals were enclosed in cages and brought up in elevators 30 feet up. The were trained to attack their adversary at first sight. Trap doors would release the animals and men simultaneously into the arena.

In the early days of the Colosseum's history the arena could be flooded and could be the stage for naval battles.

The fourth tier of the stadium had the most impressive technological innovation for its times - A retractable roof made of canvas was used to provide shelter to the audience from the scorching sun.

Our guide will give you detailed tour before descending into the lower section.
In case of an unscheduled closure of the site, the tour can be rescheduled or else the tour fee will be refunded. The ticket fee of € 20 per person cannot be refunded.
Be punctual but be patient in case of a delay in entering the lower sections of the Colosseum.

Booking:

Please insert you credit card details to pay in full, otherwise we can send you a Paypal link. Once booked and paid for, the amount of €20 will be paid to the Colosseum to hold a spot for you. This amount cannot be refunded.

Cancellation:

The access to the top tier and the underground section is granted by the Superintendent of the Colosseum. In case of a wildcat strike or closure due to inclement weather, the tour can be rescheduled for another day. In case you are not able to participate on that day, the amount can be refunded except the €20 per person which would have been deposited to the Colosseum.
