Details

The Vatican is the world's smallest sovereign state, the high seat of Catholicism for more than sixteen centuries and the residence of the popes. It has its own currency, banking and postal system. Actually it is more than that. It is the home to the famous Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. Here is preserved some of the most sublime creations of man, inspired by his eternal yearning to give expression to the divine spirit. If there is one tour that even the pope would recommend, its the Vatican city tour. What do we see on this tour?

  • VATICAN MUSEUM:
Envelopes a complex of imposing proportions: 42,000 square meters of space. The medieval nucleus of the museum was adorned by Italy's greatest artists during the renaissance.
  • GALLERY OF TAPESTRIES:
Intricate tapestries worked on in the Brussels workshop in 1531. The work is based on the cartoons by Raphael.
  • GALLERY OF MAPS:
32 Maps frescoed on the wall of this gallery between 1580 - 1583. Based on the cartoons by the great cosmographer Ignazio Dante.
  • BELVEDERE COURT:
Masterpieces of Greco Roman sculptures from antiquity discovered during excavations are kept here. Michelangelo's favorite "The Belvedere Torso and The Greek God Apollo" from 320 B.C. are kept here. But the "piece de resistance" is the marble statue of the Laocoon Group.
  • RAPHAEL STANZA:
Raphael at the zenith of his career would fresco the apartment of Pope Julius II. Considered to be the best work in his life.
  • SISTINE CHAPEL:
Created by the genius of man and the will of god: Michelangelo's arduous depiction of the genesis and the last judgment. Our advice: Leaving Rome without seeing the Sistine Chapel would be a sin.
  • St. PETER'S BASILICA:
PETROS ENI (= Peter is within). Christ had told the prince of apostles: "You will be the rock on which I shall build my church." So on the tomb of St. Peter's - tradition holds - was built the biggest church on the face of the earth. The Catholic world's heaven on earth.
